Another flat racing season is rapidly drawing to a close and juggernauts Coolmore have once again stolen the spotlight this summer, with their horse regularly justifying favouritism in the sport’s biggest contests on horse racing betting sites.
The billionaire breeders, consisting of John Magnier and his partners — often referred to in the racing community as ‘The Lads’ — have raked in over £5 million in prize money across Irish and British racing this summer.
As they continue to dominate flat racing throughout the world, let’s take a look at some of Coolmore’s best performers in the 2024 season.
City Of Troy
Their top earner this year, City Of Troy, was the champion two-year-old, and he attracted a massive crowd for his seasonal reappearance in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in May.
The thousands who flocked to the home of horse racing to catch a glimpse of what they thought was a generational talent were left bewildered when he finished ninth of 11 in the first Classic of the campaign.
City Of Troy proved his doubters wrong with a stunning victory in the Derby, and he hasn’t been stopped since with victories in the Eclipse at Sandown and the valuable Juddmonte International at York to take his winnings over £2m.
While debate remains whether City Of Troy is an elite horse or a generational talent, there’s no denying that he had transpired to be Coolmore’s stable star this season, as expected, despite that blip at Newmarket.
Los Angeles
Los Angeles has also continued his juvenile promise in his three-year-old campaign, picking up three Group victories in his four starts.
The season started with a Group 3 win over stablemate Euphoric at Leopardstown in May, and from there, all roads led to Epsom, where Los Angeles finished a very respectable third behind City Of Troy and Ambiente Friendly.
The Camelot colt reversed the form on the latter in the Irish Derby at the Curragh at the end of June, beating Sunway but less than a length as Ambiente Friendly followed them home in third.
Los Angeles’ most recent win came in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur at York, beating fellow Coolmore runner Illinois by nothing more than a neck in a dramatic finish.
Kyprios
Coolmore’s second-biggest earner in Britain this season, Kyprios, returned with a vengeance this time around, having missed the majority of last year due to an injury.
The six-year-old was held to seconds in his only two runs in 2023 as he returned late in the season, but he’s yet to be headed in his four starts this campaign.
Kyprios’ sights were lowered on his appearance as he won a Listed contest at Navan with ease in April before the bar was raised for a Group 3 race at Leopardstown.
Those victories were nice prep for the Ascot Gold Cup, and the six-year-old beat Trawlerman to regain the prestigious title after missing his defence in Berkshire 12 months prior.
The Goodwood Cup was arguably his best performance of the season, however, as he romped to a comfortable four-length victory over Sweet William on the Sussex Downs.
