    2. Anaerobic digestion: Based on the prepared feedstock, it is then loaded into the biogas generator where anaerobic digestion needs to occur. This is done by a community of microorganisms who then metabolizes the organic matter, converting it to biogas as one of their metabolic products.
    3. Biogas collection and storage The biogas produced during the digestion process is collected and stored in a gas holder or tank. With this, the biogas can be controlled and converted into electricity and heat at all times.
    4. Electricity and heat generation — the biogas goes into a generator, where it gets converted from chemical energy (in the methane) to electrical/thermal energy. The electricity is used to the site or operate into the grid and a heat surplus powers for example building heating plants, drying of digestate.
    5. Digestate management: The solid and liquid remains from the digestion process can act as a fertilizer for farming uses, known as digestate. This way the process gets a little more closed loop as less waste is produced.
