The history and evolution of table game symbols

    EnglishBy EnglishJuly 18, 2024Updated:July 18, 2024No Comments3 Mins Read

When it comes to Slots, our thoughts turn to the symbols and how they land on the reels at play. Why? Because slot game symbols are a key element to playing any type of slot, and these days, symbols can vary depending on which reels you’re spinning.

With this in mind, we wanted to explore the history and evolution of the symbols within slot games, so the next time you spin the reels in Fishin Frenzy The Big Splash, for example, you’ll know exactly how these symbols came to be.

If you’re ready, let’s take it back to the very beginning:

    Early mechanical era (Late 1800s – 1960s)

The first slot machines, like Charles Fey’s Liberty Bell (1895), featured simple, easily recognisable symbols:

    • Card suits (hearts, diamonds, spades, clubs)
    • Horseshoes
    • Liberty Bell
    • Stars

In the early 1900s, fruit symbols were introduced, partly to circumvent anti-gambling laws by creating Slots with similarities to vending machines:

    • Cherries
    • Lemons
    • Plums
    • Oranges
    • Watermelons

The BAR symbol, still common today, originated from the Bell-Fruit Gum Company logo.

    Electromechanical era (1960s – 1970s)

As machines became more sophisticated, new symbols were added:

    • ‘Lucky’ 7s
    • Single, double, and triple BAR symbols
    • Bells

    Video slot era (1970s – 1990s)

The introduction of video Slots allowed for more diverse and detailed symbols:

    • Themed symbols such as those related to wealth (gold bars, dollar signs, gems)
    • Cartoon characters
    • Movie and TV show tie-ins
    • Historical and mythological figures

    Special symbols also emerged:

    • Wild symbols (substituting for others to create matching combinations)
    • Scatter symbols (often triggering bonus features)

Early online era (Late 1990s – early 2000s)

The transition to online platforms initially mimicked land-based Slots but quickly expanded:

    • More diverse themes (ancient civilisations, fantasy worlds, etc.)
    • Enhanced graphics and animations
    • Introduction of progressive jackpot symbols

    Modern era (Mid-2000s – present)

Both land-based and online Slots have seen significant symbol evolution:

    1. Thematic diversity
    • Pop culture icons
    • Original characters
    • Abstract symbols related to game themes
    1. Special symbols
    • Expanding wilds
    • Sticky wilds
    • Multiplier symbols
    • Bonus symbols activating mini-games
    1. 3D and animated symbols
    • Fully rendered 3D characters
    • Symbols that animate when part of winning combinations
    • Interactive symbols that respond to player actions
    1. Customisation
    • Unlockable symbols as players progress
    • Seasonal variations for holidays
    • Player-chosen themes affecting symbol appearance

    Online-specific innovations

    • Cluster pays symbols (winning in groups rather than lines)
    • Megaways symbols (variable symbol sizes)
    • Infinity reels (potentially endless symbol expansion)

    Land-based specific innovations

    • Tactile buttons overlaying video screens
    • 3D effects without glasses
    • Vibrating chairs synchronised with symbol animations

    Convergence

Many innovations now appear in both online and land-based Slots, with physical machines often incorporating features first developed online.

    Future trends

    • AR (augmented reality) enhanced symbols in mobile Slots
    • VR (virtual reality) symbols
    • AI-generated symbols adapting to player preferences
    • Skill-based symbol interactions

As technology continues to advance, we can expect further innovations in how symbols are presented and interacted with.

This evolution showcases not just technological progress but also changing player expectations and the industry’s adaptability to new platforms and regulations. From simple mechanical reels to complex digital interfaces, slot symbols have remained at the heart of the gaming experience, continually reinvented for gameplay and players.
