14% Azelaic Acid: Breaking Down the Key Benefits

    EnglishBy EnglishMay 14, 2024No Comments3 Mins Read

If you’re struggling with hyperpigmentation, acne, hair loss, or inflammation, 14% azelaic acid might be the skincare solution you’ve been searching for. This naturally derived ingredient packs a powerful punch, offering a range of benefits for various skin and hair health concerns.

    1. Fades Hyperpigmentation and Uneven Skin Tone

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin concern in which patches of skin become darker than the surrounding area. It’s caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. There are several types of hyperpigmentation, including:

    • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
    • Melasma
    • Sunspots

Azelaic acid tackles hyperpigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase, a key enzyme involved in melanin production. By slowing down melanin production, it helps fade existing dark spots and prevent new ones from forming.

    2. Destroys Bacteria To Help Heal and Minimize Breakouts

Azelaic acid can also fight acne. Its antibacterial properties help kill Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), the bacteria primarily responsible for inflammation and breakouts.

Additionally, azelaic acid acts as a mild exfoliant. It helps to keep pores clear and prevent the buildup of dead skin cells and sebum that can lead to breakouts.

Finally, it reduces and calms redness and inflammation associated with acne. Its anti-inflammatory properties promote faster healing and reduce the likelihood of future breakouts.

    3. MIght Help With Hair Loss and Thinning

While primarily known for its skincare benefits, azelaic acid can also be found in hair serum and supplements. The research into how the ingredient can benefit hair growth and reduce hair thinning is still developing. Still, current speculation is that azelaic acid inhibits 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT can shrink hair follicles, contributing to hair loss.

Because research into how azelaic acid can help with hair loss is in its infancy, it is best to consult a physician or dermatologist before use. While azelaic acid is a promising option, it should not be the primary treatment for hair loss.

    4. Minimizes Pores, Fine Lines, and Wrinkles

While primarily known for its acne-fighting and brightening effects, azelaic acid also offers numerous anti-aging benefits. As a keratolytic, it helps prevent dead skin cells and other debris from clogging pores. This makes pores appear smaller, creating a smoother overall skin texture.

Azelaic acid also promotes skin cell turnover, revealing a brighter and more youthful complexion. Its exfoliating properties can help smooth out fine lines, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Some studies suggest the ingredient might support collagen production, a protein essential for skin firmness and elasticity.

Azelaic acid isn’t a replacement for dedicated anti-aging ingredients like retinol. However, its multitasking abilities make it a worthwhile addition to a skincare routine targeting both blemishes and signs of aging.

Azelaic acid is becoming more popular and prominent in various skincare and haircare products, such as Untangled Hair Supplement. If you are interested in the ingredient for your skincare routine, consult a dermatologist or physician to discuss its benefits and uses. It is especially important to consult a professional before using the ingredient for hair loss or thinning because the research is still young.
